COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Sophomore
Jack Soares scored a late goal to give the No. 16-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Saint John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Haws Field.
Soares tallied the lone goal of the game in the 85th minute for St. Olaf (10-1-2, 5-0-0 MIAC), which recorded its seventh consecutive victory in the series with Saint John's (6-3-2, 2-3-0 MIAC). The Oles were ranked No. 16 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll, while the Johnnies were coming off a victory over third-ranked Augsburg University during the week.
The win extended St. Olaf's MIAC regular-season unbeaten streak to 27 games (22-0-5) and its current unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1). It also opened up a six-point lead atop the MIAC standings for the Oles, who are the lone remaining unbeaten team in conference play.
With the clock nearing the final five minutes, Soares finally broke the deadlock by steering in a cross from the left wing from first year
Tustin Todd for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. The assist was Todd's third of the season and second in as many games.
Prior to Soares' goal, Cole Hanson recorded 10 saves for Saint John's to keep the Oles off the board. Senior
Jack Hobday stopped all three shots on goal the Johnnies mustered. St. Olaf had 11 of the game's 15 shots on goal, although the shot count was more even at 18-15.
The Oles will be off during the week before hosting Bethel University on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
