Men's hockey completes sweep of Gustavus with 2-1 win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team completed a sweep of defending conference champion Gustavus Adolphus College with a 2-1 victory on Saturday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

In a game where all three goals came in the opening period, St. Olaf (4-1-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) got goals from senior Gunnar Johnson and first year Evan Smutney, as well as a 34-save performance from first year Ryan Nolan, to complete the sweep of Gustavus (0-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAC). The Oles received votes in this week's USCHO Division III Men's Ice Hockey Poll.

St. Olaf converted on its lone power-play opportunity of the game when Johnson scored at 9:02 of the opening period off assists from sophomore Adam Johnson and junior Tony Leahy for the fourth goal of Johnson's career. Gustavus answered just over two minutes later when Ludvig Mellgren drove to the net and scored at 11:17 to tie the game at a goal apiece.

The tie barely lasted two minutes, however, as Smutney scored right off a faceoff win by junior Tyler Green for the first goal of Smutney's young collegiate career just 2:08 later. St. Olaf outshot Gustavus by a 16-7 margin in the opening period.

The Gusties generated 28 shots on goal over the final two periods but were unable to get a second one past Nolan, who moved to 3-1-0 on the season with the win. Nolan stopped 82-of-85 shots during the two-game sweep of Gustavus, which got 32 saves from netminder Marko Belak in the loss.

St. Olaf will face Saint John's University next weekend and will host the Johnnies in the series opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21.
