Todd's goal sends men's soccer past Luther, back to Sweet 16

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year Tustin Todd scored the lone goal of the game in the 64th minute to propel the fourth-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team past Luther College, 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Todd netted his second goal of the season off an assist by sophomore Ryan Wilson for the decisive moment for St. Olaf (18-2-3), which shut out Luther (10-3-7) in the third meeting between the two programs in the NCAA Tournament. With the win, the Oles advanced to the sectional round ("Sweet 16") for the fifth time in program history, all of which have come since 2015.

St. Olaf's two NCAA Tournament wins this weekend both came against teams the Oles faced – and did not defeat – during the regular season. Luther and St. Olaf played to a 1-1 tie at Rolf Mellby Field on Sept. 23.

Sophomore Jack Soares had the first scoring chance of the afternoon in the 12th minute but shot over from close range after the ball fell to him after Luther goalkeeper Aitor Lopez parried a cross to Soares. Lopez made a diving save down low to his left to deny sophomore Charlie Piller's left-footed shot two minutes later.

Junior Ryan Bechtel hit the crossbar with a right-wing cross in the 18th minute for St. Olaf's third chance in the opening 20 minutes. Luther generated its best scoring opportunity of the first half in the 37th minute, but senior Jack Hobday got down to hold a drive by Lucas Rojas.

Soares had another opportunity in the 60th minute, as the sophomore got his head to a right-wing cross from Todd but headed over. Todd eventually made the breakthrough by slotting the ball home in a 1-on-1 with Lopez in the 64th minute after being sent in on goal by Wilson.

Luther applied pressure for most of the remaining 25-plus minutes after Todd's goal, but St. Olaf held off the Norse for its 11th shutout of the season. Hobday made three of his five saves in the win after Todd's goal.

St. Olaf will take on No. 15-ranked Williams College in the sectional semifinals next weekend. The date, time, and location of that game will be announced later. The Oles and Ephs have never met previously in men's soccer.
