ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College football team suffered a 27-6 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) loss to Macalester College on Saturday night at Macalester Stadium.
St. Ola (3-5, 2-5 MIAC) was unable to put any points on the board offensively on the night, as sophomore linebacker
Josh Kerber provided the Oles' lone points of the game with a 10-yard pick-six late in the second quarter. Macalester (3-5, 2-5 MIAC) was 2-for-2 in the red zone and held St. Olaf scoreless on its two trips inside the 20-yard line to record just their second victory in the last 15 meetings between the two programs since 1997.
Macalester built a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter on a pair of touchdown runs by Brennan Litchford, who carried the ball 18 times for 117 yards and two scores for the Scots. Kerber got the Oles on the board with a 10-yard interception return with 5:08 to go until the half, but St. Olaf's attempted two-point conversion was no good, leaving Macalester with a 14-6 halftime lead.
After the break, Jack Scully threw a pair of touchdowns for Macalester, as the hosts pulled away in the second half. Scully connected with Kelly Storms for a 24-yard strike midway through the third before finding Christian Jones for a 38-yard score early in the fourth. Scully was 19-for-29 for 268 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Scots.
Junior
Luke Crosby threw for a career-high 252 yards in the loss for St. Olaf, including finding sophomore
Jackson Kauck four times for 89 yards. Sophomore
Tory Pinkney Jr. also had five receptions for 76 yards. Fifth-year senior
Jacob Vasquez was one of three Oles with a sack on the night and finished with a team-high-tying seven tackles.
St. Olaf moved the ball inside the Macalester 35-yard line three times in the second half, but all three drives stalled out, including a turnover on downs when at the 10-yard line. The Oles were 7-for-17 on third down and 0-for-3 on fourth down in the defeat.
Next up for St. Olaf is a Senior Day meeting with Hamline University on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 12 p.m. at Klein Field at Manitou.
