Men's hockey downs No. 5 St. Norbert in overtime on road

DE PERE, Wis. – First year Connor McNaughton scored 33 seconds into overtime to give the St. Olaf College men's hockey team a 5-4 victory over fifth-ranked St. Norbert College in the teams' series finale on Saturday at Cornerstone Community Center.

St. Olaf (1-1-0) fell behind 2-0 inside the first five minutes of the opening period but fought back to send the game to overtime on a goal by senior Jack Boxer with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. In the extra session, senior Gunnar Johnson fed the puck down low to McNaughton after a faceoff win and McNaughton shoveled the puck in on the backhand to give the Oles their first win over the Green Knights since 1992. St. Norbert had been undefeated in the last 15 meetings (14-0-1) in the series.

Goals from Braydon Beahm and Bryan Gilman in the first 4:34 of the first period gave the Green Knights an early 2-0 lead, but the Oles responded with two goals of their own late in the period to tie it at 2-2 after 20 minutes. Sophomore Panayioti Efraimidis netted his third collegiate goal on the power play at 16:04 before senior Jonathan Panisa got his first of the season 2:22 later to even it up.

St. Norbert reclaimed the lead just 1:39 into the middle period on a goal by Jack Seaverson, but St. Olaf got the goal back on first year Eli Miller's first collegiate tally 3:14 later. Logan Domrowsky put the Green Knights on top for the third time on the day at 7:37 of the second, as the hosts took a 4-3 lead into the second intermission.

Boxer scored the goal that eventually forced overtime at 14:19 of the third period off sophomore Adam Johnson's second assist of the game. The goal was the second of Boxer's career. St. Olaf had a chance to win it in regulation on the power play after St. Norbert took a tripping penalty with 2:11 to go but could not capitalize, setting up McNaughton's overtime heroics.

St. Olaf outshot St. Norbert by a 29-26 margin in shots on goal. First year Ryan Nolan picked up his first collegiate victory with a 22-save performance for the Oles, while Vaughn Makar had 24 stops for the Green Knights.

Next up for St. Olaf is a pair of home games against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foes next weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. puck drop versus UW-Eau Claire on Friday, Nov. 7.
