Men's hockey takes high-scoring series opener from Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The No. 15-ranked St. Olaf College men's hockey team scored multiple goals in each period in a 7-4 victory over Lake Forest College in the opening game of the teams' non-conference series on Saturday at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.

St. Olaf (5-2-2) scored twice in the first period, three times in the second, and twice more in the third to defeat Lake Forest (3-5-1). The seven goals were the most by the Oles since a 7-1 victory over Saint John's University on Feb. 9, 2024. St. Olaf was ranked No. 15 this week in the DIIIHockeyNews national poll.

Six skaters had multi-point performances for St. Olaf, led by a three-point game from sophomore Nicholas Sewecke, who tallied two goals and an assist. Senior Jonathan Panisa, junior Tony Leahy, and first year Connor McNaughton had a goal and an assist apiece, while junior Bjorn Lervick and sophomore Adam Johnson both collected two assists.

After Lake Forest struck first 6:20 into the opening period, St. Olaf answered just 1:06 later when Boxer set up Kempf's second collegiate goal. Hayes gave the Oles a 2-1 lead at the first intermission with his first collegiate goal at the 12:24 mark, as the first year blasted home a one-timer off a feed from Lervick.

Max Jaldung brought the Foresters even at 2-2 with a power-play goal just 33 seconds into the second period, but St. Olaf netted the next three goals in the span of 3:11 to open up a 5-2 lead. McNaughton gave the Oles the lead for good at 4:49 before Leahy scored his first goal of the season 34 seconds later with a power-play tally. Panisa added another power-play goal at the 8:00 mark to push St. Olaf's lead to 5-2.

Lake Forest cut its deficit to one goal at the second intermission on goals from Colin Bella and Will Brown in the final six minutes of the middle period. Sewecke accounted for both of the third period's goals, scoring a power-play goal at 6:33 and an empty-netter in the final minute. St. Olaf was 3-for-5 on the power play in the win, while Lake Forest was 2-for-5.

First year Ryan Nolan improved to 4-2-0 on the season with a 32-save performance for the Oles, while Dylan Kruss had 27 saves for the Foresters. Nolan also earned his first collegiate assist on St. Olaf's fifth goal.

The series finale is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30 back at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
