NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's swimming and diving team defeated Gustavus Adolphus College for the first time in 13 years, while the men's team fell to the Gusties in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) dual meet on Friday evening at Skoglund Center Natatorium.
The St. Olaf women picked up a 162-138 victory over Gustavus, led by four Oles who won multiple events in the dual. The Ole men lost by a 209-70 margin despite a pair of first-place performances from senior
Aiden Yung.
Junior
Katie Homme, sophomore
Olivia Small, and junior
Alana Schmitzer all won a pair of swimming events for St. Olaf, while senior
Zibby Hanifl was first in both sessions of the one-meter diving. Hanifl posted scores of 174.45 and 254.35.
Homme was the first to touch the wall in the 50-yard freestyle (24.97) and 200-yard freestyle (1:58.51), winning the later event by seven one-hundredths of a second. Small swept the 100-yard (59.70) and 200-yard (2:11.64) backstroke titles, while Schmitzer won the 100-yard (1:09.09) and 200-yard (2:32.89) breaststroke events.
Small, Schmitzer, and Homme were also part of St. Olaf's first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:49.05) along with sophomore McKenna Hulgren. Senior
Paige Steenblock was also a victor for the Oles in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.07).
Yung claimed first-place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.71) and 200-yard individual medley (1:58.58) to pace the Ole men, while junior
Jack Homme won the 100-yard butterfly (53.35) by one-tenth of a second.
St. Olaf will swim at the three-day Rochester Invitational Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 4-6 at Rochester Recreational Center Natatorium.
