DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team defeated UW-Superior by a 5-2 margin in its first match since October on Sunday at Duluth Indoor Sports Center.
St. Olaf (2-0) swept the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point under the new NCAA Division III scoring format and went on to claim victories at the top-four singles spots to top UW-Superior (8-2). The win snapped the Yellowjackets' six-match winning streak.
In doubles, St. Olaf lost a combined six games across the three sets to grab the advantage going into singles. Under the new scoring format for non-conference matches, the team that wins the majority of the three one-set doubles matches earns one point in the overall match score.

Olha Zubarieva and
Fiona O'Flaherty cruised to a 6-1 victory at the top spot, seniors
Jane Spading and
Sarah Clark picked up a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and sophomore
Elliana Loesch and junior
Emma Clift posted a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Zubarieva, Spading, O'Flaherty, and Clark recorded victories at the No. 1-4 spots for the Oles, with Spading and O'Flaherty winning their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles in super tiebreakers. Zubarieva put the first singles point on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 victory atop the lineup.
O'Flaherty picked up a 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 3 singles before Clark sealed the team result with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles. Spading made it 5-0 by coming back from dropping a first-set tiebreaker to claim a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) win at No. 4 singles.
UW-Superior won the final two singles matches on court with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles and a super-tiebreaker victory at No. 6 singles.
St. Olaf will host Wartburg College and Northwestern College (Iowa) in non-conference matches on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Tostrud Center.
