Double-doubles from Kormann and Smith lift women's basketball to Senior Day win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team got double-doubles from senior Sophia Kormann and sophomore Chloee Smith while claiming a 58-45 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over Augsburg University on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

Kormann and Smith combined for 30 points and 32 rebounds for St. Olaf (7-14, 1-13 MIAC), which held Augsburg (3-18, 1-13 MIAC) to 25.0 percent (15-for-60) from the field in its first conference win of the season. The Oles outscored the Auggies by a 36-10 margin in the paint and outrebounded the visitors by a 56-32 differential.

Prior to the game, St. Olaf celebrated its senior class of Ziling Zhen, Paige Yagodinski, Sarah Tangen, Kormann, and student manager Megan Henson, as well as their families, for their hard work and dedication to the program over their careers. The game was also part of St. Olaf's celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

Kormann recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to go with three assists and two blocked shots. Smith added her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high-tying 17 rebounds while contributing four steals and three assists. Yagodinski was also in double figures in her first game in nearly two months with 12 points.

Yagodinski scored the first seven points of the game for St. Olaf to help the Oles to a 7-2 lead over the first 1:45. The five-point advantage was the largest of the quarter, as St. Olaf took a 15-13 lead into the second thanks to an eight-point opening quarter from Yagodinski.

Both teams shot under 30.0 percent in the second quarter, as but St. Olaf outscored Augsburg by a 13-11 margin in the quarter to bump its lead to 28-24 at the half. The Oles used a 7-0 run that included a three-pointer by Tangen to take their largest lead of the half at 24-16 three minutes into the period before the Auggies limited St. Olaf to four points over the remainder of the quarter.

Kormann scored four points as part of a 5-0 start to the third quarter for St. Olaf that extended the Oles' lead to nine. Later in the quarter, back-to-back layups by Smith gave the Oles a 10-point lead at 42-32, but the Auggies got it down to five before a three-point play by Zhen ended the scoring in the quarter.

St. Olaf maintained a lead of at least eight points throughout the fourth quarter by holding Augsburg to 15.4 percent (2-for-13) shooting in the quarter. The Oles led by as many as 14 while closing out a win in a game they led for 38:28 and trailed for just 40 seconds.

St. Olaf will host nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
