Doubles sweep too much for men's tennis to overcome against Saints

OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team could not overcome getting swept in doubles in a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) loss to the College of St. Scholastica on Sunday at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.

After St. Scholastica (5-1, 2-1 MIAC) swept the three doubles matches, St. Olaf (1-3, 1-1 MIAC) fought back in singles but lost a pair of super tiebreakers while coming up two points shy in the overall score. Junior Bogdan Vizoli, sophomore Marjan Veldic, and first year Madden Vanderwerf picked up singles wins for the Oles.

The Saints took control of the match with 8-6, 8-6, and 8-3 victories at the three doubles spots, meaning the Oles had to win five of the six singles matches to pull off the comeback. St. Scholastica added a straight-set win at No. 3 singles in the first singles match to finish to increase its lead to 4-0 and put St. Olaf in must-win situations in the remaining five matches.

Veldic got the Oles on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, but the Saints got to the five necessary points with a super-tiebreaker victory at No. 6 singles. With the team result determined, St. Olaf went on to win two of the final three singles matches, all of which were decided by super tiebreakers.

Vanderwerf moved to 10-0 on the season in singles by coming back from losing the first set to claim a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) victory at No. 5 singles. Vizoli followed with a come-from-behind win of his own at No. 1 singles, as the junior fought back for a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) victory to move to 2-0 in conference play. The Saints completed the 6-3 margin with a super-tiebreaker win at No. 4 singles.

The Oles will look to bounce back against Hamline University on Saturday, March 8 at 4 p.m. at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.
