Augustana blanks baseball on day two of trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The St. Olaf College baseball team was held to two hits in a 10-0, eight-inning loss to Augustana College (Ill.) on Friday afternoon at Chain Of Lakes Park.

Coming off an extra-inning victory over nationally-ranked Rowan University the day before, St. Olaf (6-4) managed just two hits against Augustana (8-4), which received votes in this week's D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 25 poll. Sophomore Sam Hruska kept the Oles in the game with five-plus innings of two-run ball before the Vikings scored eight runs over the final two innings of the run-rule win.

Hruska allowed just two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in his third collegiate start for St. Olaf. Augustana's Zach DeMarlie limited the Oles to two hits and one walk with one strikeout over the eight-inning complete game. Junior Breckin Hadley was the lone Ole to reach safely, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a walk in his fourth consecutive multi-hit game.

Alec McGinnis hit a solo home run with one out in the third – his first of two home runs and three extra-base hits in the game – to give Augustana the first run. St. Olaf threatened to tie the game or take the lead in the top of the fifth, as Hadley led off with a single and junior Jack Pettit dropped down a bunt that resulted in a fielder's choice and an error to put two runners on with nobody out. Junior Frank Lavin advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, but DeMarlie got a pair of pop outs to end the inning and avoid any damage.

McGinnis added another solo home run with two outs in the fifth and a run-scoring double in Augustana's three-run seventh. The Vikings ended the game early with five runs in the bottom of the eighth.

St. Olaf's trip will continue with a single game against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, March 22 at 8:30 a.m. CDT.
