O'Flaherty wins twice, women's tennis downed at Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Senior Fiona O'Flaherty had a hand in both of the St. Olaf College women's tennis team's match wins in a 7-2 loss to regionally-ranked Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex.

O'Flaherty teamed with junior Alexandra Berns for a victory at No. 2 doubles and recorded a straight-set win at No. 3 singles for St. Olaf (9-2, 6-2 MIAC), which lost its second match in a row after a 9-0 start. Bethel (10-4, 5-1 MIAC) was ranked No. 10 in the Central Region in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.

After Bethel's regionally-ranked duo of Lauryn Douglas and Michaella Sullivan put the first point on the board, O'Flaherty and Berns leveled the score at 1-1 with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles. The win ran O'Flaherty and Berns' record to 7-1 in the conference this season. The Royals pulled out an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to carry a 2-1 lead into singles.

Bethel won five of the six singles matches to complete the win, with all six matches being decided in straight sets. O'Flaherty picked up her team-leading 11th singles victory of the season (11-2) and improved to 7-1 in the MIAC with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

St. Olaf continues a challenging stretch of its schedule with a trip to nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Sunday, April 13 for a 10 a.m. start.
