ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team fell to No. 35-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College by a 9-0 score in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Sunday at Swanson Tennis Center.
In the second match of its last three against a nationally-ranked foe, St. Olaf (9-3, 6-3 MIAC) was blanked by Gustavus (16-7, 4-0 MIAC) for its third consecutive defeat after a 9-0 start to the season. The match was moved indoors due to rain on Sunday morning.
The Gusties claimed the three doubles matches by scores of 8-1, 8-5, and 8-4, with senior
Fiona O'Flaherty and junior
Alexandra Berns playing in the closest score line at No. 2 doubles.
Gustavus went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets. Senior
Sarah Clark won seven games in her 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 5 singles, while senior
Olha Zubarieva won five games against nationally-ranked Karina Elvestrom in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat atop the lineup.
Despite the three consecutive losses, St. Olaf needs either a win in its one remaining conference match or one loss by either Hamline University or the College of St. Scholastica the rest of the way to secure a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs.
The Oles will face UW-River Falls (10 a.m.) and the University of Minnesota Morris (1 p.m.) in River Falls, Wis. on Saturday, April 19.
