Men's tennis bows out of MIAC Playoffs to nationally-ranked Gusties

ST. PETER, Minn. – The fourth-seeded St. Olaf College men's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded and No. 31-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the semifinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Tennis Playoffs on Thursday afternoon at Swanson Tennis Center.

After picking up its first playoff win since 2014 two days earlier, St. Olaf (7-8) ran into nationally-ranked Gustavus (18-11) in its first appearance in the semifinals since 2015. The Gusties, who have won 16 of the 17 MIAC Playoff titles, got wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point before recording straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles to move on to the championship match.

In doubles, Gustavus' duo of Gage Gohl and Tyler Haddorff, which was ranked No. 6 in the country this week, downed junior Bogdan Vizoli and first year Lou Smith by a 6-1 margin at No. 1 doubles. Josh Christensen and Taona Mhwandagara claimed a 6-3 victory over first year Daniel Meunier and sophomore Ryan Birnesser. First year Madden Vanderwerf and sophomore Marjan Veldic trailed 5-3 at No. 2 doubles when the match was pulled off court.

Marco Siviero, Domink Knutson, and Mhwandagara posted straight-set singles wins for the Gusties, who had won the first sets of the other three matches and were leading in two of the three second sets in the matches that went unfinished. Vizoli was up 3-2 on Gohl, who was ranked No. 32 in the country in singles this week, in the second set at No. 1 singles when the match called.

After his match went unfinished, Vanderwerf finished the season 16-3 overall in singles play to tie Ted Nagel '04 for the most singles wins by an Ole in recorded program history. With a roster that included one senior, one junior, three sophomores, and five first years, the Oles had their first winning record in MIAC play since 2014-15 this season.
