Oles complete 2-2 showing at Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the second day in a row, the St. Olaf College volleyball team bounced back from a loss to a nationally-ranked team with a sweep, as the Oles fell 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 to No. 15-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges before defeating Pomona-Pitzer Colleges by a 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 margin to close out the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday at Roberts Pavillion and Voelkel Gymnasium.

In its first match of the day, St. Olaf (2-2) was unable to get its offense going and hit just .089 in the three-set loss to nationally-ranked CMS (3-0). The Oles rebounded by hitting .258 to win three close sets over Pomona-Pitzer (2-1) to wrap up the trip at 2-2.

After the conclusion of the tournament, junior Maren Miller was named to the 10-member All-Tournament Team. In four matches, Miller hit .518 with 33 kills (2.36 per set), 14 total blocks (1.00 per set), 10 digs, and four aces.

St. Olaf will head to St. Paul for the KTIS Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6 at the University of Northwestern. The Oles will start the tournament against the University of Dubuque at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

CMS held St. Olaf to a .058 attack percentage over the first two sets to take a two-sets-to-none lead and held off the Oles in the third to complete the sweep. The Athenas hit .261 as a team in the win, led by 17 kills and a .516 attack percentage from Brooke McKee.

Junior Lilah Van Scoyoc was the lone Ole with double-digit kills in the loss, picking up 10 over the three sets. Sophomore Carlie Beckstrand collected eight kills, but no other Ole had more than four. Senior Paige Christophersen recorded a double-double with 16 assists and 12 digs, while senior Morgan Ryan had a match-high 14 digs.

St. Olaf held a 4-3 lead in the very-early stages of the opening set, but CMS won seven of the next nine points to take a 10-6 lead and led by at least three points for the rest of the set. The Oles jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the second set and led 12-9 midway through the set before the Athenas went on a 6-1 run to take the lead for good.

The third set was a tighter affair despite CMS racing out to a 6-2 lead. Late in the set, the Oles were ahead by two at 20-18 and were level at 22-22 before CMS took the final three points.

St. Olaf hit over .230 in all three sets in its second match of the day to top the Sagehens in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Miller led the offense with 12 kills on 16 errorless swings to hit .750 while also being part of four blocks.

Beckstrand was also in double figures with 10 kills while hitting .304, with classmate Mehsa Krause contributing nine kills of her own. Christophersen finished with her third double-double on the trip with 25 assists and 10 digs, while Van Scoyoc and Ryan combined for 32 digs defensively with 17 and 15, respectively.

Four early attack errors by Pomona-Pitzer helped St. Olaf to an 8-2 lead in the opening set, but the Sagehens stayed in touch by closing the gap to 9-8. The Oles gradually built an 18-11 lead and went on to close out the set after hitting .302.

In the second, St. Olaf won the first four points as part of a 7-2 start and went on to win the set in wire-to-wire fashion. Pomona-Pitzer got within a point twice in the middle of the set, but Beckstrand and Krause tallied four kills apiece in the set to help the Oles to a two-set advantage.

The Oles quickly erased an early 7-1 deficit in the third set by winning the next six points but did not hold the lead in the set until the latter stages. Trailing 20-19, St. Olaf won the next four points to go ahead 23-20, with sophomore Karin Fowler capping the spurt with back-to-back aces. Out of a timeout, Pomona-Pitzer rattled off three consecutive points to tie it at 23-23 before the Oles won the final two points out of a timeout of their own. Ryan had nine of her 15 digs in the final set.
