NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Facing its highest-ranked opponent in over 10 years, the St. Olaf College women's soccer team was blanked, 3-0, by fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Johns Hopkins (1-0-1) scored once in the opening half and added a pair of insurance goals in the second half to shut out St. Olaf (1-1-0) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Blue Jays, who made the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last season, were ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and were the Oles' highest-ranked opponent since a 2-0 loss to fourth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Aug. 29, 2014.
The visitors had nearly 60 percent of the possession in the opening half and took all six of the half's shots, but St. Olaf limited the Blue Jays to solitary goal from Caroline Marcus in the 28th minute. Tatum Adamson set up the goal by getting past a defender near the end line on the right side and cutting the ball back to Marcus to fire home for the lone goal of the half.
Maria Romo-Nichols doubled Johns Hopkins' lead just over 10 minutes into the second half, cutting in from the left side of the box and tucking a shot inside the left post. Megha Salvi added a third goal in the 82nd minute with a shot from the top of the box on the right that flew in under the crossbar.
Johns Hopkins held a 16-5 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 margin in shots on goal, over the 90 minutes while holding St. Olaf without a shot until the 64th minute. First year
Charlotte Percy made six saves in the loss for the Oles, while Ella Kruntchev stopped both shots on goal she faced over the first 85-plus minutes for the Blue Jays.
St. Olaf will hit the road for the first time for a 6 p.m. game at Wartburg College on Wednesday, Sept. 3.
