No. 22 men's soccer suffers first loss of season in Superior

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The No. 22-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to UW-Superior by a 3-2 margin after playing over 30 minutes with 10 players on Friday night at Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium.

In a rematch of last season's second-round meeting in the NCAA Tournament, UW-Superior (1-3-0) broke a 2-2 tie with a 75th-minute penalty kick to claim its first win of the season and deal St. Olaf (4-1-1) its first loss of the fall. The Oles' 4-0-1 start was its best opening to a season since winning six games in a row to start the 2011 campaign.

Junior Ryan Bechtel and sophomore Kymani Chitulangoma accounted for St. Olaf's two goals which were sandwiched around goals by Jake Kidd and Seth Davidson for UW-Superior. Davidson added his second of the game from the penalty spot 20 minutes after the Oles were assessed a red card for the decisive goal. The win was the second for the Yellowjackets in the 10 all-time meetings between the two programs.

Bechtel got St. Olaf off to a fast start by scoring at the back post off a cross-box pass from sophomore Charlie Piller in the fifth minute for Bechtel's second goal of the season. The lead lasted barely five minutes, however, as Kidd got on the end of a free kick by Freddy Watson to steer the ball inside the far post in the 10th minute to bring UW-Superior level.

The Yellowjackets took their first lead of the season in the 32nd minute when Davidson slotted the ball in off a knockdown from Bryce Boldt to make it 2-1 in favor of the hosts. St. Olaf entered the game having conceded just twice in the opening five games of the season.

The Oles tied the game in the final minute of the opening half, as Soares tapped the ball in after classmate Harry Ross got in behind the UW-Superior defense and squared the ball to Chitulangoma. The goal marked the third consecutive game with a goal for Chitulangoma.

Ten minutes into the second half, senior Caspar Olseth was sent off after being judged to have taken down Kidd after Kidd was through on goal, although the contact appeared to be made by senior Ben Beckman. After an appeal, the red card was changed to Beckman. The Yellowjackets were unable to take advance of their numerical advantage until Davidson slotted home a penalty kick after senior goalkeeper Jack Hobday took down Boldt in the box.

Sophomore Riker Doolittle had the best chance for the Oles after Davidson's penalty kick. With 10 minutes to go, Doolittle cut infield from the left but saw his shot saved in the lower-left corner by Luke Lockman.

Despite playing with 10 for 35 minutes, St. Olaf outshot UW-Superior by a 15-12 margin overall. Shots on goal were even at six apiece.

The Oles will look to bounce back at home on Sunday, Sept. 14 against Nebraska Wesleyan. Kickoff has been moved up to 11 a.m. due to the forecast for near record-high temperatures.
