NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore
Alec Mahoney of the St. Olaf College football team was selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week for the first time, as announced on Tuesday.
A day after being named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Defensive Player of the Week, Mahoney landed one of the two safety spots on the national team of the week following his performance in St. Olaf's 17-16 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday. Tuesday's announcement made him St. Olaf's 24th all-time honoree on the D3football.com Team of the Week, which honors the top performances at each position from the previous week and is in its 27th season.
Mahoney recorded a team-high eight total tackles (five solo), 1.0 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and the game-sealing interception for the Oles on Saturday. His forced fumble came with the Cobbers approaching the red zone in a 3-0 game late in the first quarter. With St. Olaf clinging to a one-point lead and 1:00 remaining in the game, Mahoney picked off a first-down pass to secure the Oles' first win over Concordia since 2011.
St. Olaf will take on crosstown-rival Carleton College in the Goat Trophy game on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. at Carleton's Bob Sullivan Field.
