Men's soccer gets past St. Scholastica in second half

DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 19-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team got second-half goals from sophomores Riker Doolittle and Jack Soares in a 2-0 shutout of the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Kenny Harkins Field.

In a game where St. Olaf (8-1-2, 3-0-0 MIAC) outshot St. Scholastica (0-7-3, 0-3-0 MIAC) by a 29-4 margin, the Oles were forced to wait for goals from Doolittle and Soares after the break to extend their unbeaten streak in MIAC play to 25 games (20-0-5). St. Olaf was ranked No. 19 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll and ran its overall unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1).

After a scoreless first half where the Oles held a 13-2 advantage in shots, Doolittle broke the deadlock with his third goal of the season in the 57th minute for the only goal St. Olaf would need.

Soares doubled the Oles' advantage in the 82nd minute with his fifth goal of the season – tied for the team lead – by scoring on a rebound after a save on a header by junior Ryan Bechtel, who recorded his ninth assist of the season, following a free kick by senior Robi Buzakovic. The nine assists for Bechtel rank second in NCAA Division III this season.

Shortly after Soares' goal, St. Scholastica was reduced to 10 players due to a second yellow card in a matter of minutes to a Saint. Ben Hallberg kept the Saints close for most of the game with a 14-save afternoon, while sophomore Beckett Carlson logged his second shutout of the season with a three-save performance for the Oles.

St. Olaf will take on Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
