Johnson and Duffy-Shaw score early, Oles blank Saints on road

DULUTH, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team scored twice in the opening seven-plus minutes on its way to a 3-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) road victory over the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon at Kenny Harkins Field.

Junior Emily Johnson and senior Cat Duffy-Shaw both scored early on and senior Marit Klagge added a goal as time expired for St. Olaf (8-1-1, 2-0-1 MIAC), which improved to 13-1-2 all-time against St. Scholastica (2-6-2, 0-2-1 MIAC) with the victory. The Oles, who were ranked fifth in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll, also ran their unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) with the win.

St. Olaf's 8-1-1 record is its second-best 10-game start to a season ever, trailing only the 2011 team, which began the season 8-0-2.

Johnson gave the Oles an early lead by putting in a rebound after junior Wren VanDeWalker's left-footed effort from the top of the box was spilled in front in the third minute. The goal was Johnson's MIAC-leading 10th of the season and her eighth in the last six games.

Less than five minutes later, Duffy-Shaw fired a 25-yard volley into the top-right corner after a corner kick was cleared to her feet for her first goal of the season. The score remained 2-0 until Klagge robbed a Saint defender of the ball and scored in a 1-on-1 with the keeper as the clock ran out for the senior's fourth goal of the season.

St. Olaf held 32-4 advantage in shots in the game, including a 15-0 mark in the first half, and took 15 of the game's 17 shots on goal, as well as all 10 of the game's corner kicks. Senich Rylee made nine saves in the loss for the hosts, while first year Charlotte Percy picked up her fourth shutout of the season with a pair of saves for the Oles.

Next up for St. Olaf is a home game against Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m.
