NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team scored twice in the opening 10 minutes on its way to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Hope College on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Juniors
Emily Johnson and
Wren VanDeWalker both found the back of the net early on for St. Olaf (3-1-0) before Hope (2-2-0) struck back to make it a 2-1 game just over 15 minutes in. Johnson added a second goal early in the second half to give the Oles a two-goal cushion, as St. Olaf claimed its first-ever win over Hope in the second-ever meeting between the two programs.
A little over seven minutes in, Johnson opened the scoring by slotting home a right-footed finish after senior
Katie Beaudry played Johnson in on goal with a long pass out of the back. The assist was the second of Beaudry's career.
Less than three minutes later, the Oles doubled their lead when VanDeWalker pounced on a rebound from close range after sophomore
Avery Sames' long-distance shot was spilled by the Hope goalkeeper. VanDeWalker's goal was the second of her collegiate career.
Hope cut its deficit in half in the 16th minute when Olivia Dieppa scored on a shot that deflected off a St. Olaf defender. The Oles took the 2-1 lead into the halftime break despite being outshot by a 10-8 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
Johnson completed her second two-goal performance of the season – the third of her career – in the 58th minute with a curling right-footed shot to the top-right corner from outside the box.
St. Olaf edged Hope, 15-14, in the overall shot count in the game and held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal, although the visitors earned 10 of the game's 15 corner kicks. First year
Charlotte Percy moved to 3-1-0 in her young career with a five-save afternoon for the Oles, while Clara Feenstra stopped six shots for the Flying Dutch.
Next up for St. Olaf is a home game against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
