No. 14 men's hockey comes back twice in tie at UW-River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 14-ranked St. Olaf College men's hockey team overcame a pair of one-goal deficits in a 2-2 tie against UW-River Falls on Friday night at Hunt Arena.

In a game where UW-River Falls (7-8-1) held two leads, St. Olaf (7-2-5) got tying goals from first year Willy Johnson and junior Joey Kennelly in the eventual 2-2 tie that extended the Oles' unbeaten streak in the series to five games (4-0-1). The tie also pushed St. Olaf's current unbeaten streak to seven games (3-0-4). The Oles were ranked No. 14 this week by D-III Hockey News.

Alex Atwill gave the Falcons an early 1-0 lead just 1:10 into the game, an advantage the hosts held onto until early in the second period. Johnson netted his second goal of the season at the 4:10 mark of the middle period to tie the game at 1-1 off assists from sophomore Nicholas Sewecke and first year Eli Miller.

UW-River Falls went back on top four minutes later when Keenan Ingram struck for a power-play goal at 8:05 of the second with one of the hosts' 13 shots on goal on their four power plays on the night. The lead barely lasted two minutes, however, as senior Gunnar Johnson and first year Carl Ericksen set up Kennelly's second goal of the season at the 10:18 mark.

The two teams combined for 22 shots on goal in the third period and eight more in overtime, but neither team could break the second tie of the night. St. Olaf got a power play less than one minute into the extra session after UW-River Falls was called for too many players on the ice to set up a 4-on-3 power play, but Brennan Boynton saved all three shots on goal the Oles generated.

The teams did not do a shootout, which does not affect anything in non-conference games. First year Ryan Nolan made 40 saves for St. Olaf while moving to 5-2-1 on the season. Boynton had 24 stops for UW-River Falls, which held a 42-26 advantage in shots on goal in the game.

The Oles will conclude non-conference play with a trip to No. 13/14-ranked UW-Stout for a 7:30 p.m. start on Saturday, Jan. 17.
