Kraay's layup in closing seconds caps men's basketball's comeback win over Pipers

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's basketball team overcame a 16-point first-half deficit to claim a 75-74 victory at Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.

After trailing by 16 in the first half and 14 at halftime, St. Olaf (10-7, 6-2 MIAC) scored 48 second-half points to rally past Hamline (11-5, 3-4) in a game that saw the teams trade the lead three times in the final 1:03. First year Max Kraay capped the comeback for the Oles with the game-winning layup with six seconds remaining to give St. Olaf its fifth win in its last six MIAC games.

Senior Kobe Kirk led St. Olaf's balanced scoring attack with 17 points, five rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Kraay scored 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while sophomore Rex Lamb also tallied 16 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Sophomore AJ Uhl recorded 15 points on 7-for-12 from the field to go with a team-high seven rebounds. The quartet combined to score 64 of the Oles' 75 points in the win.

Dominic Dosmann was 12-for-16 from the field while scoring a game-high 25 points for Hamline, which had four scorers in double figures. Raoul Vaidya added 14 points, Ethan Wall-Atim had a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Braedy Laliberte registered 11 points and eight boards. Fifty of the Pipers' 74 points came in the paint.

Dossman led Hamline to a 41-27 halftime lead by scoring 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting in an opening 20 minutes where the Pipers trailed for just 58 seconds. The hosts led by four midway through the half before going on a 12-0 run over a five-minute stretch to take the largest lead of the game for either team at 33-17 with 4:29 to go in the half. Kirk snapped a six-minute scoring drought for the Oles with jumpers on the next two possessions, but the Pipers took a 14-point lead into the break after holding St. Olaf to 11-for-31 (35.5 percent) shooting in the first half.

St. Olaf shot 18-for-29 (62.1 percent) from the field in the second half, including going 6-for-9 (66.7 percent) from three-point range. Hamline still held a 62-52 lead midway through the second half before Kraay scored five points in a 7-0 run to make it a three-point game. The Oles faced a five-point deficit with 3:19 to go but closed the game on an 8-2 run to complete the comeback.

Layups by Kraay and Uhl made it a one-point game with 1:03 to go before another Uhl layup with 28 seconds left put St. Olaf ahead for the first time since the opening two minutes of the game. Hamline responded with a layup by Wall-Atim to reclaim the lead at 74-73 with 11.7 seconds on the clock, but the Oles went the other way and Lamb found a cutting Kraay for the game-winning layup with 4.6 seconds left. Hamline had a look at a three-pointer at the buzzer but it hit off the rim. Kraay (14), Lamb (12), and Uhl (11) combined for 37 of the Oles' 48 second-half points.

St. Olaf looks to continue its three-game winning streak with a trip to Saint Mary's University for a 7 p.m. start on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
