MOORHEAD, Minn. – Senior
Molly Terebayza scored the lone goal of the game in the first minute of the third period to send the St. Olaf College women's hockey team to 1-0 victory over Concordia-Moorhead in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series opener on Friday night at Moorhead Sports Center.
Terebayza tallied her fifth goal in the last six games just 31 seconds into the third period for St. Olaf (8-8-0, 5-4-0 MIAC), which got a 40-save shutout from sophomore
Baylyn Shankman to blank Concordia (7-9-0, 4-5-0 MIAC). The win moved the Oles ahead of the Cobbers and into a tie for fourth in the conference standings.
Inside the first minute of the third, Terebayza exchanged passes with senior
Solvei Berg-Messerole as Berg-Messerole found Terebayza cutting to the net with a backhand pass for Terebayza's fifth goal of the season. The goal was the 41st of Terebayza's career, moving her into sole possession of ninth in program history.
Shankman took care of the rest, stopping 14 shots in the first and third periods and 12 in the second to claim her first shutout of the season and the sixth of her career. Shankman lowered her goals-against average this season to 1.64 and raised her save percentage to .942 on the night.
Concordia outshot St. Olaf by a 40-28 margin in the game despite the Oles having four power plays to one for the Cobbers. Two of St. Olaf's four power plays came in the third period to help the Oles wind down the victory.
The Oles will go for the sweep in a 4 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Moorhead.
