Men's hockey takes finale from Concordia-Moorhead behind big second period

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team completed a four-point weekend with a 5-2 victory over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After an overtime loss on Friday night, St. Olaf (8-4-5, 4-2-2 MIAC) broke through with three unanswered goals in the second period and went on top Concordia (8-8-2, 4-5-1 MIAC) for just the second time in the last nine meetings since 2023.

Senior Jonathan Panisa tallied a pair of third-period goals to lead three Oles with multi-point performances in the win. First year Willy Johnson picked up a goal and two assists, while junior Tony Leahy added a goal and an assist. First year Connor McNaughton joined Panisa and Johnson with a goal as well.

Following a scoreless opening period, Leahy opened the scoring for St. Olaf at the 7:04 mark of the second period, flipping the puck in while being knocked to the ice for his second goal of the season. The Oles added goals from McNaughton and Johnson just 52 seconds apart inside the final five minutes of the period to carry a 3-0 lead into the second intermission.

McNaughton made it 2-0 by jamming the puck home on the backhand after getting it behind the net at 15:08 of the second. Less than one minute later, Leahy intercepted a clearing attempt to set up a 3-on-2 before finding Johnson in the slot for Johnson's third of the season.

Concordia-Moorhead cut into its deficit with a shorthanded goal on a breakaway by Caden Triggs in the final seconds of a St. Olaf power play 4:57 into the third period. Panisa got the next two goals, however, to extend the Oles' lead to 5-1 with his fourth-career two-goal performance. Triggs added a second goal just 26 seconds after Panisa's second for the final goal of the game.

Sophomore Matthew Malin made 25 of his 31 saves over the final two periods while improving to 3-1-3 on the season for St. Olaf. Noel Olsonawski, who entered the weekend ranked fourth in NCAA Division III in goals-against average and save percentage, had 20 saves in the loss for Concordia-Moorhead.

The Oles will open their MIAC series against Augsburg University next weekend on home ice at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30.
