BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Sophomore
Patrick Gardner and senior
Tytan Small of the St. Olaf College football team and sophomore Tustin Todd of the men's soccer team were named in this week's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athletes of the Week, as announced on Monday.
Gardner and Small were selected as the MIAC Football Special Teams and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, while Todd earned MIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors. All three Oles were named one of the MIAC Athletes of the Week for the first time in their respective careers.
Gardner made all five of his kicks, including the game-winning field goal as time expired, in St. Olaf's 23-21 victory over Augsburg University on Saturday. The sophomore was good from 20 yards as the clock ran out after making field goals of 32 and 25 yards, as well as both of his extra points, earlier in the game to score a career-high 11 points.
Small had five tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss, 2.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one fumble on Saturday. The senior had a sack and forced fumble that set up an early second-quarter touchdown and another one late in the second quarter before recovering another fumble midway through the fourth quarter. Small's play from the linebacker spot also helped the Oles limit the Auggies to six rushing yards on 20 attempts.
Todd scored goals in both of No. 1 St. Olaf's MIAC wins last week, as the Oles extended their perfect start to 11-0-0. The sophomore curled the ball into the top corner as part of a late three-goal flurry in Wednesday's 3-0 victory at Carleton College before scoring the opening goal in Saturday's 4-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead.
