Women's basketball tops Augsburg for first MIAC win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team secured its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory of the season with a 54-48 win over Augsburg University on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

After dropping the first meeting between the two teams by a 52-46 margin in Minneapolis back on Dec. 6, St. Olaf (6-17, 1-15 MIAC) returned the favor with a six-point victory over Augsburg (5-18, 2-14 MIAC) to snap its 13-game losing streak. Junior Bree Wilkerson, first year Erin Schauer, and sophomore Grace Gertner all scored in double figures for the Oles in the win.

Wilkerson scored a team-high 13 points and recorded four of St. Olaf's seven steals, while Schauer and Gertner added 11 points apiece. Schauer was 3-for-7 from three-point range, while Gertner's 11 points were one shy of her career high. Sophomore Elise Hahn finished with nine points and 16 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end, for her fifth game this season with at least 15 rebounds.

Schauer was 3-for-3 from the field, including two three-pointers, in an eight-point first quarter to lead St. Olaf to a 14-9 lead after 10 minutes. Schauer's two three-pointers came in the span of 1:39 midway through the quarter as part of a 12-4 close to the quarter after Augsburg led 5-2 early.

A layup by first year Norah Bickett with 3:56 to go in the second quarter gave St. Olaf a nine-point lead, but the Auggies scored the next eight points and held the Oles scoreless for nearly four minutes during an 8-0 run. Gertner gave St. Olaf a 24-21 halftime lead with a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left in the half.

St. Olaf reclaimed a nine-point advantage with a 6-0 run midway through the third and took a 36-29 lead into the fourth after holding the Auggies to eight points in the third. In the fourth, Augsburg made it a one-point game at 42-41 on a three-pointer by Wakinyela Bear with 4:39 to go but was never able to grab the lead.

After the Bear three-pointer, St. Olaf went on an 11-0 run that included four consecutive made free throws on a foul and ensuing technical foul, followed by a three-pointer by Schauer with 1:02 to go to give the Oles a 12-point lead. Bear scored five points in the span of 12 seconds to get the St. Olaf lead down to seven with 41 seconds to go, but the Oles held on from there.

St. Olaf will hit the road for the final time this season on Wednesday, Feb. 18 for a 5:15 p.m. game at Concordia-Moorhead.
