Nationally-ranked Cobbers top women's basketball in Oles' final road game of season

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team dropped its final road game of the season with an 83-57 loss to No. 21/24-ranked Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday evening at Memorial Auditorium.

Coming off its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory of the season, St. Olaf (6-18, 1-16 MIAC) made a season-high 11 three-pointers, but Concordia (21-3, 15-2 MIAC) shot 50.8 percent (30-for-50) from the field to complete a sweep of the Oles. The win secured at least a share of the MIAC regular-season title for the Cobbers, who were ranked No. 21 in the D3hoops.com Women's Top 25 and No. 24 in the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) NCAA Division III Coaches' Poll this week.

St. Olaf was 11-for-25 (44.0 percent) from three-point range but just 11-for-30 (36.7 percent) from inside the arc in the loss. First year Erin Schauer, junior Joy Brandenstein, and first year Norah Bickett combined for 10 of the Oles' 11 made three-pointers on the night.

Brandenstein scored a team-high 15 points in 19 minutes for St. Olaf, shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range. Schauer knocked down 4-of-6 three-pointers in a 12-point night, while Bickett was 3-for-6 from deep to add nine points off the bench.

Maya Metcalf was 10-for-14 from the field on her way to a game-high 25 points for Concordia, which had assists on 25 of its 30 made field goals in the win. Genevieve Gruba was the only other Cobber in double figures with 11 points as 13 Cobbers scored in the game. Concordia enjoyed a 38-16 advantage in points in the paint and got to the free-throw line 19 times, compared to just three for St. Olaf.

Concordia started the game by shooting 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) in the opening quarter to take a 23-12 lead after 10 minutes. Schauer hit a pair of three-pointers to account for half of St. Olaf's points in the quarter. The Oles were down just six with 1:24 to go before the Cobbers closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to open up a double-digit lead.

Concordia took a 43-25 lead into the halftime break after outscoring St. Olaf by a 20-13 margin in the second quarter. After trailing by 21 with 4:10 to go in the second, the Oles went on an 8-0 run to trim their deficit to 13, but Alexa Snesrud made a three-pointer in the final seconds to give the Cobbers an 18-point halftime lead.

Brandenstein made all five of her shots, including two three-pointers, in a 12-point second half, but Metcalf scored 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting for Concordia after the break. After trailing by as many as 30 midway through the third, the Oles got within 15 with four minutes to go in the fourth on a three-point play by junior Kaia Krocak before the Cobbers closed the game on a 9-0 run.

St. Olaf will conclude its season against crosstown-rival Carleton College in a 1 p.m. tip-off at Skoglund Center on Saturday, Feb. 21.
