Women's tennis topples St. Scholastica for first win of season

VIRGINIA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team picked up its first dual match victory of the season with a 5-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win over the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday at Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club.

In its first match of the spring, St. Olaf (1-2, 1-1 MIAC) swept the three doubles matches to win the doubles point and went on to win four of the six singles matches to down St. Scholastica (0-4, 0-2 MIAC) for the fifth consecutive season. Senior Alexandra Berns, senior Emma Clift, and first year Dana Keesler were all victories in both singles and doubles for the Oles.

Berns and Clift improved to 3-0 overall this season with a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles in the closest of the three doubles matches. The tandems of Keesler and sophomore Elliana Loesch and junior Mads Hockmuth and first year Norah Brusco posted 6-1 victories in the other two spots in their first matches as partners.

All six of the singles matches were decided in straight sets, although three included a tiebreak set. Berns won her third consecutive singles match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory atop the lineup, while Keesler also dropped just two games in her 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.

Clift and Sloane both won first-set tiebreaks in their matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively, before having more comfortable score lines in the second sets. Clift won 7-6 (4), 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Sloane posted a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

St. Olaf will take on Wartburg College (9 a.m.) and Northwestern College (4 p.m.) on campus at the Tostrud Center on Saturday, Feb. 21.
