DECORAH, Iowa – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team was blanked, 7-0, by Luther College in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon at Naslund Sports and Recreation Center.
Facing one of the better teams in the region, St. Olaf (2-4) got swept in doubles before playing three tight first sets in singles but ultimately came up empty against Luther (7-1). The Norse, who picked up their sixth victory in a row, finished 21-6 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season.
Luther dropped just six games across the three sets in doubles, getting wins by scores of 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3 to secure the doubles point. The Norse won all six of the singles matches in straight sets as well, although three of the first sets were decided by scores of 7-5 or 7-6.
At No. 1 singles, senior
Bogdan Vizoli fought back from 4-0 down in the opening set in an eventual 7-5, 6-3 loss to Joao Benvenutti. Sophomores
Lou Smith and
Jacob Schultz dropped first-set tiebreakers in their straight-set defeats at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
St. Olaf will get back to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action with a road match against Saint John's University at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 8 at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
