Softball stymied by No. 3 Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – The St. Olaf College softball team was unable to get its offense going in 14-0 (five innings) and 6-0 losses to third-ranked Texas Lutheran University on Wednesday evening at Ed Kruse Stadium.

Facing its highest-ranked opponent in at least a decade, St. Olaf (7-5) fell to 3-3 on its Texas trip with the two shutout losses to Texas Lutheran (18-2), which was ranked No. 3 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association this week.

After an off day on Thursday, March 19, the Oles will conclude their trip with a twin bill at Trinity University (Texas) at 4/6 p.m. on Friday, March 20.

Two Texas Lutheran pitchers limited St. Olaf to two hits in the opener as the Bulldogs scored multiple runs in all four of their innings at the plate in the run-rule win. Texas Lutheran's offense, which ranks in the top 10 nationally in stolen bases, runs, stolen bases per game, hits, and RBI, scored twice in the fitrs, second, and fourth innings, as well as eight times in the third.

Junior Kyra Narum and senior Belle Schmidt accounted for St. Olaf's two hits against a pitching staff that is tied for first in the country with eighth shutouts this season. Schmidt had a two-out infield single in the third before Narum began the fifth with a leadoff single.

St. Olaf was outhit by just a 10-7 margin in game two but was unable to push across any runs. Senior Roxanne Ring held the Bulldogs under their average of 8.0 runs per game but suffered her first loss of the season in a six-inning complete game.

First year Hannah Yaeger was the lone Ole with multiple hits in the game by going 2-for-4. Five other Oles had one hit apiece. St. Olaf had at least one base runner in every inning except the sixth but left nine runners stranded in the loss.

St. Olaf's best chances to score came in the first, fourth, and seventh innings when the Oles had two runners on with two outs but could not cash in.
