NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore
Jacob Schultz won a lengthy match at No. 5 singles for the St. Olaf College men's tennis team in a 6-1 loss to Carleton College on Tuesday afternoon at Pat Lamb Tennis Courts.
Schultz provided the lone point for St. Olaf (7-8, 3-3 MIAC) by winning a super tiebreak at No. 5 singles, but Carleton (16-5, 7-0 MIAC) stayed unbeaten in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play by sweeping the three doubles matches and taking the other five singles matches in straight sets. Schultz's win gave the Oles their first team point against the Knights since a No. 1 singles victory by
Christian Beck '18 in an 8-1 loss on April 13, 2017.
Carleton grabbed the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles and a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Junior
Marjan Veldic and sophomore
Madden Vanderwerf got out to a 4-1 lead at No. 2 doubles before the Knights came back to win a tiebreaker, 7-3, to complete the sweep.
In singles, Carleton logged straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 2 singles to get to the four points necessary to secure the team result. Senior
Bogdan Vizoli battled Akshay Garapati, who was ranked No. 34 nationally in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the fall, to a first-set tiebreak before falling by a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 margin.
Schultz took the first set of his match against Jack Rivkin at No. 5 singles before Rivkin fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to win a tiebreak and force a super tiebreak. In the decider, Schultz was up 3-0 early before saving match points while down 9-7 and 9-8 to tie it at 9-9. Rivkin fended off a match point to level it at 10-10 before Schultz won the final two points, highlighted by a backhand passing shot on the final point.
Schultz's win moved him to a team-best 5-1 in MIAC play in singles this season. In the final match on court, junior
Cathal Mee dropped two tight sets at No. 6 singles in a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) defeat.
St. Olaf will look to bounce back against Macalester College on Saturday, April 18. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Carlson Courts, but weather may move the match indoors to West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center in Owatonna.
