Women's tennis completes 4-0 trip by defeating Principia

ELSAH, Ill. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team completed a 4-0 spring break trip and won its fifth match in a row with a 5-2 victory over Principia College on Thursday afternoon at Hexberg Tennis Center.

St. Olaf (9-4) extended its winning streak by topping Principia (4-8) in the first meeting between the two programs, as the middle and bottom of the Oles' lineup accounted for all five points in the victory. Junior Mads Hockmuth was the lone Ole to win both of her matches on the day, with seven different players having a hand in at least one point.

The pairings of Hockmuth/junior Elliana Loesch and junior Charlotte Sloane/first year Haley Swanson gave St. Olaf the doubles point with their first victories as partners this season. Hockmuth and Loesch rolled to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, while Sloane and Swanson registered a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Seniors Alexandra Berns and Emma Clift saw their 12-match winning streak at No. 1 doubles come to an end with a 7-5 loss after the team point had already been secured. The pairing's 12-match winning streak was the longest for a No. 1 doubles tandem since 2017.

Needing a singles split to complete the unbeaten trip, St. Olaf did one better by winning four of the six matches. First year Dana Keesler improved her record to 8-3 and won her third match in a row via a 6-0, 6-2 score line at No. 3 singles. Hockmuth followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles to bring the Oles within a point of securing the win.

Principia closed the gap to 3-2 with a super-tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles and a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles before sophomores Evelyn Smiley and Lidia Bach cruised to wins in the final two matches. Smiley locked up the team victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles before Bach finished off a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.

St. Olaf will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against Carleton College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8 at Carleton's Pat Lamb Tennis Courts.
