NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior
Bogdan Vizoli won the decisive super tiebreak at No. 1 singles to clinch a 4-3 victory for the St. Olaf College men's tennis team over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Wednesday afternoon at Carlson Courts.
In a match that may end up being a preview of a playoff matchup, Vizoli won the final four points to take the super tiebreak, 10-7, at No. 1 singles to give St. Olaf (9-8, 5-3 MIAC) a narrow win over Bethel (17-3, 5-3 MIAC), which defeated the Oles by a 7-2 margin last season. The victory was St. Olaf's second in the last eight meetings with Bethel since 2019.
In doubles, the Oles grabbed what proved to be a critical point thanks to Vizoli and sophomore
Lou Smith winning a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles, 7-4. That win came after the teams split the other two matches, with the Royals posting a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles before junior
Marjan Veldic and sophomore
Madden Vanderwerf claimed a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles to improve to 4-1 in MIAC play.
Bethel overturned its 1-0 deficit with a straight-sets win at No. 5 singles and a super-tiebreak victory at No. 6 singles to grab a 2-1 lead. Vanderwerf put the first singles point on the board for the Oles with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to leave the outcome depending on the top-three spots in the lineup.
The Royals took a super tiebreak at No. 3 singles to get within a point of clinching the win with two matches on court. Smith turned all the attention to the No. 1 singles match after recording a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 2 singles.
After dropping a first-set tiebreak, Vizoli stormed to a 6-1 win in set two to set up a third super tiebreak of the day. The senior fell behind 3-0 and 6-4 before winning the final four points to defeat Carter Sheard, who topped Vizoli by a 6-3, 6-0 margin last year after Vizoli won a super tiebreak in the pair's meeting in 2023-24.
St. Olaf will close out the regular season with a trip to Hamline University for an 11 am. match on Saturday, April 25.
