NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College football team started fast before getting stymied by crosstown-rival Carleton College in a 37-7 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) loss on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Klein Field at Manitou.
Senior
Bryon Sauvy ripped off a 71-yard touchdown run on the third play from scrimmage for St. Olaf (0-3, 0-2 MIAC), but Carleton matched the score with a touchdown on its first possession and scored the final 37 points of the game to keep possession of the Goat Trophy. The 30-point margin was the largest for either team in the series since an 85-28 St. Olaf victory on Nov. 3, 2007. The last three meeting had been decided by a total of 15 points.
Sauvy, the MIAC's leading rusher this season, recorded the third 100-yard rushing performance of his career with 104 yards on 17 carries but had just 33 yards on the 16 rushes other than his early touchdown burst. The Knights held the Oles to just 38 yards passing and five first downs in the game.
Carleton racked up 228 yards rushing, possessed the ball for 40:28, and was 11-for-16 on third down in the win. Evan Olds had 123 total yards (67 rushing, 56 receiving) on 30 touches with one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown for the Knights, who picked off three passes, including one that was returned for a touchdown.
Juniors
Alec Mahoney and
Logan Bosch tied for the team lead with 10 total tackles for St. Olaf, with Mahoney also breaking up a pair of passes. Sophomores
Dylan Christianson and
Mateo Furness had a sack apiece, with Christianson's being the first of his collegiate career.
On the third play from scrimmage, Sauvy broke loose for a 71-yard touchdown on a third-and-six play to get the Oles out to a quick 7-0 lead. Carleton responded with a 10-play, 67-yard touchdown drive to tie the game at 7-7. With the score still tied, Jackson LeBlanc ran an interception back 73 yards for a touchdown three minutes into the second quarter to send the Knights on their way to the win.
Tyler Dimond, Olds, and Deon Bergner ran for touchdowns from that point on for Carleton. Dimond's seven-yard run with 31 seconds to go in the first half capped a 96-yard drive and gave the visitors a 21-7 halftime lead. Bergner's 37-yard run down the right sideline with nine seconds remaining in the game capped the scoring.
St. Olaf will be back at home for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Augsburg University as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 3.
