John Moening serves as an assistant coach and primarily works with the goalkeepers for the St. Olaf men's and women's soccer programs. The 2025-26 season is his fourth with the women's program and second with the men's program. He is also the recruiting coordinator for the women's program.
In Moening's three seasons as an assistant with the women's program, St. Olaf has posted an overall record of 30-14-9 (.651), including a mark of 18-8-7 (.652) in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). St. Olaf won a program-record 14 games as part of a 14-3-3 season in 2024 that included the program's second-ever victory in the MIAC Playoffs.
St. Olaf has produced six United Soccer Coaches All-Region honorees, nine All-MIAC selections, 48 Academic All-MIAC honorees, and 15 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selections in his three seasons with the program. An Ole was also named the MIAC Rookie of the Year in both 2022 and 2023.
In his first season with the men's program in 2024, St. Olaf went 15-4-4 (.739) overall and 8-0-2 (.900) in the MIACÂ to earn a share of the MIAC regular-season title. The Oles went on to become the first program to "three-peat" as MIAC Playoff champions and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Moening came to St. Olaf after serving as the goalkeeper coach for the men's and women's programs at Hamline University from 2018-21. While at Hamline, he coached 2018 Honorable Mention All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honoree Dean Isaacson.
Since October 2010, Moening has worked as a goalkeeper coach and director of Keliix Intra Soccer Club, running the goalkeeper program for all ages at the club. He has also served as the goalkeeper coach for TFE/Fusion Soccer Club since June 2016, running training sessions for ages U11-U18.
Prior to his time at Hamline, Moening was the goalkeeper coach for the girls teams at Minneapolis South and Minneapolis Washburn High Schools from 2014-20 and The Blake School from 2020-21.
