Matthew Gibbons is in his third season as an assistant coach for the St. Olaf men’s and women's soccer programs in 2025-26.
During his three seasons with the men's program, St. Olaf has gone 50-12-9 (.768) overall and 23-2-5 (.850) in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Confernece, while winning two MIAC regular-season titles, three MIAC Playoff titles, and the 2023 NCAA Division III national championship. St. Olaf has appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons, advancing to the "Sweet 16" in 2022 and the second round in 2024.
In his three seasons with the women's program, the Oles have posted an overall record of 30-15-9 (.639), including a mark of 18-8-7 (.652) in conference play. St. Olaf won a program-record 14 games in 2024 and advanced to the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs for the second time in Gibbons' three seasons.
Gibbons played four years of soccer at Gustavus Adolphus College, where he was a three-time All-MIAC honoree, a three-time United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Region honoree, and a two-time All-American. He was named a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American in 2018 after recording seven goals and 11 assists in 18 games and was named a D3soccer.com Third Team All-American in 2019 after compiling eight goals and 17 assists in 18 games.
During his four-year career, Gibbons tallied 95 points on 27 goals and 41 assists in 72 games for the Gusties, collecting All-MIAC honors in 2018, 2019, and 2021 after being an Honorable Mention All-MIAC honoree in 2017. His teams went a combined 59-18-2 (.760) and won a pair of MIAC regular-season titles and one MIAC Playoffs title, while making a pair of appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
After graduating from Gustavus, Gibbons played professionally in Germany for Germania Eicherscheid and SV Breinig.
