ST. PETER, Minn.-
Steven Sherman scored with the goalie pulled and 43 seconds remaining as St. Olaf tied Gustavus Adolphus 3-3 Friday night in St. Peter. The Oles won the shootout 2-0 to earn an extra point in the MIAC standings.
Sherman also scored on the first attempt for St. Olaf (2-7-1, 1-3-1 MIAC) in the shootout.
Peter Lindblad added the other shootout tally as
Steve Papciak stopped both Gustavus Adolphus (3-3-5, 1-0-4 MIAC) attempts to give the Oles two of three possible MIAC points, though the game is officially recognized as a tie by the NCAA.
The Oles struck first on
Tim Tuscher's power play goal 4:30 into the game.
Matt Geurts and
Mark Rath earned assists on the third goal of the season for Tuscher which temporarily tied him for the team lead. Cory Ellis tied the game for the Gusties with a little over five minutes to play in the first and as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie through 20 minutes.
Lindblad scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season 2:22 into the second period as St. Olaf regained the lead.
Gordon Wells and
Nick Marsh were credited with assists. Drew Aspinwall tied the game with a power play marker at 11:26 as the teams remained tied after the second period.
Gustavus had three third period power plays but the Oles special teams held strong but just after the third expired, Schyler Adams gave the Gusties their first lead of the night at 14:17 of the third period. That set the stage for the heroics as the Oles pulled Papciak with a minute to go and just 17 seconds later, Sherman tied the game.
Overtime ended without a winner and while the game officially shows a tie for both teams, an extra point was available in the MIAC standings during the shootout that followed. St. Olaf scored on both attempts while Papciak stopped both Gustie efforts.
The Oles outshot Gustavus 32-29 for the game including 4-1 in overtime. Jack Walsh finished with three assists for the Gusties while Marsh tallied two to lead St. Olaf.
The two teams complete a home-and-home series Saturday night in Northfield at 7:30 p.m.
