WINONA, Minn.-
Riley Aeikens matched a career-high with 17 points and the St. Olaf men's basketball team used a 22-2 run in the second half en route to an 81-50 win over Saint Mary's Wednesday at Saint Mary's Gym.
Aeikens scored 17, on 7-of-10 shooting, for the fourth time in his collegiate career, the previous three occurrences coming during his freshman season. His season-high for points entering Wednesday was 12 at Macalester on Dec. 3. Aeikens' performance came on a night when the Oles were without their leading scorer and rebounder,
Ben Figini, who did not suit up.
The run by St. Olaf (10-1, 5-1 MIAC) came on the heels of a Saint Mary's (2-7, 1-5 MIAC) three-pointer by Connor Kaiser that cut the Oles lead to 53-44. Over a 9:38 stretch, the Cardinals were outscored 22-2 with both of their points coming from the free throw line. Saint Mary's went 0-for-9 during the run while the Oles forced five turnovers.
Despite the absence of Figini, St. Olaf dominated in the paint, outscoring the Cardinals 36-16. The Oles also turned Saint Mary's over 18 times and held a 22-4 advantage in points off turnovers. St. Olaf held the Cardinals to 26.4 percent (14-for-53) from the field in the game, including 22.2 percent in the second half. Saint Mary's also shot just 5-for-21 from three-point range.
Sterling Nielsen and
Justin Pahl also scored in double figures for St. Olaf. Nielsen has scored double figures in nine of 11 games this season while Pahl has done so in 10 of 11 contests.
The Oles will host Hamline at Skoglund Center on Saturday, Jan. 10 beginning at 3 p.m.
