MINNEAPOLIS - The St. Olaf women's basketball team defeated Augsburg 64-58 in the MIAC opener for each school on Wednesday night at Si Mellby Hall.
St. Olaf (5-1, 1-0 MIAC) led by as many as 13 in the first half, as
Afton Wolter jumpstarted the scoring with 11 points in the first 20 minutes including three from beyond the arc. Â The Oles shot 45.7% from the field while the Auggies shot 30.6%. Â
Augsburg (5-2, 0-1 MIAC) came within four points with under four minutes remaining, but the Oles held strong at the free throw line, going 10-of-14 in the final five minutes to close out the win. Â The Auggies got into foul trouble with two players fouling out, and two others ending the game with four fouls each.
Wolter and
Betsey Daly led the Oles in scoring with 16 points each. Â 14 of Daly's points came from the foul stripe where she went 14-18 for the game. Â
Woo Bandel also scored in double figures with 10 points and added three steals.
St. Olaf travels to St. Joseph, Minn. on Saturday for a MIAC game with Saint Benedict.
