Riley Aeikens' 30-footer in the closing seconds of regulation sparked a 100-88 double overtime win as the No. 15 St. Olaf men's basketball team fended off upset-hungry Hamline University on Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.
Sterling Nielsen had a career-best 28 points to go with six assists as the Oles (20-3, 15-3 MIAC) won their seventh straight. Aeiken's long-range jumper tied the game at 75-75 to force the extra session. He finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Ben Figini added 15 points and 13 rebounds.Â
In the second overtime, reserve
Caleb Lunning scored five straight points on a three and layup to give St. Olaf a six-point advangage with 1:20 left. The Oles then made six straight free throws to compete the victory.Â
Hamline (10-13, 7-11 MIAC) led by as many as nine in the second half. But the Oles, trailing by four with 19 seconds left, got a layup by Nielsen with 12 seconds left. Hamline then missed 1-of-2 on the ensuing possession to set up Aeikens' heroics.Â
The Pipers were paced by Dior Ford, who had 17 points while playing all 50 minutes. Travis Johnson added 15 points off the bench wile Quinton Garvis and Austin Johnson had 11 each.Â
Pahl finished with 17 points and five assists and Lunning nine points for the Oles, who will play at first place St. Thomas (21-1, 16-1 MIAC) on Monday night in St. Paul.Â
