NORTHFIELD, Minn. - St. Olaf erased a 30-10 second quarter deficit with 16 unanswered points late in the fourth quarter, but Luther prevailed in the second overtime with a 46-40 victory over the host Oles on Saturday at Manitou Field.
Christian Moore scored the game-winning touchdown from a yard out on a third-and-goal. The Norse stopped St. Olaf on its possession in the second overtime with an interception by Dante Joseph.
The win offset a 368-yard passing day by the Oles'
Jack Goldstein, who was 40-of-66 with four touchdowns and the double-overtime interception.
Jorgen Salveson had 13 receptions for 133 yards and three scores, while
Connor Henderson had 12 catches for 137 yards. Â Goldstein, who rushed for a team-high 45 yards as well, connected with
Troy Peterson on an 18-yard strike to get the Oles on the board in the second quarter.Â
After a 42-yard field goal by the Oles'
Kyle McMahan, Luther scored 14 straight. The first touchdown came on a 34-yard throw from Brady Letney to Ricardo Chavez and 49 seconds later Ricky Humes recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to make it 30-10.Â
Salveson's first TD catch with five seconds left in the first half capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive to get the Oles within 13 at the break.Â
St. Olaf sustained drives most of the afternoon. The Oles held the time of possession battle with the run-heavy Norse (30:27-29:33) and had 30 first downs to Luther's 20. St. Olaf had an edge in total yards (505-458) and converted on 11-of-22 on third down.Â
Moore rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns, including a 93-yard run on Luther's first offensive play. Letney carried the ball 20 times for 87 yards and a score while Andrew Whalen had 74 yards on 10 carries.Â
The St. Olaf defense was paced by
Colten Yahn's five solo and eight assisted tackles, including one for a loss, and
Luke Dahl, who had four solo and 10 solo takedowns.Â
