Ole men upend Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS - St. Olaf survived a second half rush from Augsburg to defeat the host Auggies 70-68 in a MIAC men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Nate Albers had 15 points, going 3-for-4 from the arc, to lead the Oles (6-7, 4-4 MIAC) to their third straight victory. Ben Scheffley added 14 points, Frank Delaney 12 and Austin Majeskie 10.

Albers hit two free throws to break a 66-66 tie and had a chance to secure the win with the Oles leading by two with 7.7 seconds left and a 1-and-1. He missed the first free throw, but the Auggies' Richie Perea missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Augsburg was led by Collin Olmscheid's 20 points. Chuckie Smith and Nick Varner chipped in 11 points each.

St. Olaf led by as many as 15 in the first half and by 14 at the break. The Oles used a 21-8 run over a six-plus minute stretch to take a 38-23 advantage.

Augsburg (6-7, 4-4 MIAC) did not go quietly. The Auggies used a 14-0 run early in the second half to tie the game at 47-47 with 12:12 left. Scheffley then knocked down a pull up jumper to stop the run and regain the lead. The Auggies led by as many as four late in the game, at 60-56, before St. Olaf scored six straight in the final two minutes.

The Oles outrebounded the Auggies 30-21 and had a 9-3 advantage in second-chance points. The teams combined for a mere 17 turnovers and had 20 assists each.

St. Olaf hosts Saint Mary's on Monday before playing at Carleton on Wednesday.
