Willis, defense lead Oles to 22-20 win at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS - Khayleb Willis rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown and the St. Olaf defense forced five turnovers in a 22-20 MIAC football road victory at Augsburg University on Saturday afternoon.

A pair of two-point conversions proved the difference, as St. Olaf converted pass plays on each of its touchdowns.

The St. Olaf defense, which allowed only seven points, was led by Cullen Mudrack, who had eight total tackles, and interceptions from Tommy Fleetham and Christopher Araiza. The Oles forced fumbles on the first two Augsburg drives, before the Auggies scored on their third. The only other AU score came on a 39-yard interception return by Jabri Guy.

Other than the interception, Ole quarterback Jack Goldstein was efficient. He was 17-for-26 for 120 yards and a touchdown. Goldstein led the Oles on a 14-play, 54-yard drive that consumed 7:27 to all but seal the victory. The drive didn't end in points, but it pinned Augsburg at its own 7-yard line with 28 seconds to play.

Gonzalo Pirela, who had a team-best seven receptions for 67 yards, made field goals from 20 and 35 yards. The attempts were the first of the year for St. Olaf (3-3, 2-2 MIAC), which moved to .500 through six games for the first time since 2012.

The Oles controlled the football in the victory, their first over Augsburg since a 24-20 victory in 2011. St. Olaf ran 87 plays to the Auggies' 45, outgained the Auggies 319-199, including a 199-74 edge in rushing yards.

Willis had 136 yards on 23 carries in the first half. He gave way to Kosey Mitchell for most of the workload in the second. Mitchell rushed for 61 yards on 24 carries.

Troy Peterson added six catches for 39 yards and Ben Smithson had a TD catch as his only reception, one that gave the Oles an 8-0 lead.
