Peterson sets career reception record, Oles lose to Gusties 41-13

ST. PETER, Minn - Troy Peterson broke the Oles' career reception record, but St. Olaf (4-4, 3-3 MIAC) fell 41-13 to Gustavus Adolphus (4-4, 3-3 MIAC) in a conference matchup on Saturday.

In the third quarter, Peterson caught an eight yard pass from Jack Goldstein. The catch was the 186th of Peterson's career, with which he has surpassed Horace Gant to become the new leader in career receptions in St. Olaf football history.  Peterson finished the day with seven catches to bring his career total to 189.

Gustavus scored first on a 15-yard run by Hunter Johnson in the opening quarter.  The Oles answered back midway through the second when Goldstein hit Gonzalo Pirela on a 12-yard pass to the end zone. The Gusties would regain the lead three second before the half ended when Hunter Johnson completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brice Panning, taking advantage of a lost Pirela fumble on the Oles 28-yard line.

St. Olaf responded in the third quarter, as Peterson caught a touchdown pass on his record setting day. The six points from the 21-yard reception would be the last ones the Oles would manage. Sam Bailey missed the extra point kick and the Oles would not score again.

Gustavus scored four more times, including a 69-yard run from Karim Ortiz and a 35-yard interception return by Jordan Kahlow.

Goldstein finished the day with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Khayleb Willis led the Oles in rushing with 57 yards. Jorgen Salveson led the Ole receivers in yards with 70.

With the loss, the Oles have lost five straight to Gustavus. The last time the Oles beat the Gusties was a 17-14 win back in 2012.

Next up for the Oles is a road game at Concordia next Saturday.
