Oles hold off Pipers for 40-33 homecoming victory

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - St. Olaf forced and recovered a fumble on its own eight-yard line to secure a 40-33 MIAC football victory over visiting Hamline University on Saturday at Klein Field at Manitou.

St. Olaf built leads of 28-6 and 34-13, but the Pipers rode the right arm of Justice Spriggs and were within a yard of tying the game in the final minute. Hamline lined up first-and-goal from the St. Olaf two-yard line, but the Oles held their ground for two snaps. With 40 seconds left, Spriggs bobbled the snap, regained possession before Max Karpinske forced the fumble.

Khayleb Willis rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown, and Jack Goldstein was 14-for-21 for 212 yards and four touchdowns for St. Olaf (2-3, 1-2 MIAC), which snapped a four-game losing streak to the Pipers in the process.

The Oles survived a 436-yard, five-touchdown passing performance from Justice Spriggs and a 274-yard receiving afternoon from Nick Barber. Barber had 16 receptions, including four touchdowns.

Goldstein had touchdown passes to four different recievers. Troy Peterson had nine catches for 144 yards, which included a 55-yard touchdown. Gonzalo Pierela had a 56-yard TD catch, while Ben Smithson and Kosey Mitchell had short recieving touchdowns, from two and one yards.

Mitchell also rushed for a touchdown, a score that gave the Oles a 40-26 cushion with 13:02 to play in the fourth quarter.

Hamline got within a score on Nick Barber's six-yard touchdown catch with 3:47 to play.

Spriggs was 33-of-50 and was intercepted twice. The first interception, by Luke Dahl, was returned 59 yards to the Hamline 36.
