Austin Majeskie had a career-high 29 points as St. Olaf defeated St. Thomas 74-65 in an MIAC men's basketball game at Skoglund Center on Monday night.
Majeskie was 13-for-16 from the field and had five rebounds and three assists.
Robert Tobroxen and
Nate Albers added 12 points apiece for St. Olaf, which was 13-for-16 from the free throw line in the win.
Grant Schaeffer had 19 points, Michael Hannon 18 points off the bench and Jordan Burich 11 rebounds in the loss for UST (17-6, 13-5 MIAC).
St. Olaf led 30-25 at the half. Majeskie nailed back-to-back three-pointers to give the Oles a 12-point lead with 14:54 to go. UST chipped away, cutting the lead to three on three separate occasions before
Riley Parham and Tobroxen scored on back-to-back possessions to push the lead to seven. Inside the final two minutes,
Troy Diggins Jr. and Albers hit four straight free throws to keep the Tommies at arm's length.
With the win, the Oles (11-12, 9-9 MIAC) swept the season series with UST for the first time since 1996-97, head coach
Dan Kosmoski's third season at St. Olaf. It was the third win in the last four outings for the Oles, who moved into a tie for the sixth and final spot in the MIAC Playoffs with two games to play.
St. Olaf shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the floor in the second half and had 13 assists and only nine turnovers. UST had 13 turnovers with a mere five assists in the loss.
St. Olaf hosts Carleton on Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m. in a battle for the Goat Trophy. St. Olaf has held the Goat since 2011-12. To reclaim the traveling trophy, a school must sweep the season series from the beholder. Carleton defeated St. Olaf 75-61 on January 18. The Knights have won 11 straight.
