MANKATO, Minn. – Head coach
Kurt Anderson collected his 300th-career win as the St. Olaf College men's soccer team shut out Bethany Lutheran, 4-0, in a non-conference matchup Thursday night, collecting goals from
Folarin Bandele,
Ian Lockhart,
Sam Heupel and
Kieran Mullen at BLC Soccer Field.
Anderson, the winningest coach in program history, registered his 300th win with the men's program and became the 19th active Division III men's head coach to achieve the milestone. Anderson is in his 30th season with the Oles and has led them to 21 winning seasons, including six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances. With a career record of 300-210-41, he has received MIAC Coach of the Year honors four times and led St. Olaf to its first NCAA Division III "Sweet Sixteen" appearance in 2015. Anderson served as the St. Olaf women's soccer head coach for five seasons, accumulating a 46-37-7 record, and leading the Oles to the MIAC Playoffs in 2004.
Bandele scored the first goal of the game off of a penalty kick in the 24th
minute of play, followed by a goal from Lockhart just 15 minutes later to account for St. Olaf's (4-11-0) scoring in the first half, as Bethany Lutheran (6-7-3) was held scoreless. Bethany Lutheran committed a foul inside the box after St. Olaf crossed the ball from the right side and
Alexis Legigand attempted to head the ball, but was pushed from behind, resulting in an Ole penalty kick. Bandele took the penalty kick and broke the deadlock, sending the ball to the lower-right corner of the net to give the Oles a 1-0 lead.
St. Olaf doubled its lead in the 39th minute when
Will Douglas sent in a corner kick that
Olaf Morkeberg directed to the center of the box where Lockhart made contact and knocked it to the back of the net to account for his first-career goal.
The Oles took a 3-0 lead in the 73rd
minute of play when Douglas took a free kick halfway through Bethany Lutheran territory and Heupel headed it in from the right side of the box inside the left post. Less than three minutes later, Lockhart set up Mullen for his first-career goal to account for the Oles' fourth goal of the night.
St. Olaf outshot Bethany Lutheran, 18-5, including 11 shots on goal for the Oles compared to just five from the Vikings.
Ben Meyers collected the victory in the goal and tallied five saves. This is the second shutout for St. Olaf this season and the second time the Oles have recorded four goals in one game.
The Oles are back to action Saturday, Oct. 20 as they host the University of St. Thomas in a MIAC contest at Rolf Mellby Field at 3:30 p.m.
