Men's soccer uses big second half to down Saint Mary's

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's soccer team used a three-goal second half to take down Saint Mary's University (Minn.) by a 4-1 score in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Junior Sam Heupel and sophomores Will Douglas, Olaf Morkeberg and Farid Sani all recorded goals for St. Olaf (3-3-0, 2-0-0 MIAC), which broke a 1-1 halftime tie with Saint Mary's (3-3-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) with second-half goals from Douglas, Morkeberg and Sani. The victory was the 299th in the career of head coach Kurt Anderson.

St. Olaf broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Heupel knocked in a rebound after junior Keith Loukas' shot from outside the box was saved by Alberto Centeno. Late in the first half, the Cardinals tied the game going into the break when Robbie Sobczak scored off an assist from Tyler Hyatt in the 42nd minute.

Douglas scored for the second time in as many games in the 59th minute for the eventual game-winning goal. After Loukas sent a free kick into the box, the ball deflected off a Saint Mary's defender into the path of Douglas to make it 2-1. Just over three minutes later, Douglas found Morkeberg in the middle of the box and Morkeberg fired the ball past Centeno, with Pato Cortina also earning an assist on Morkeberg's first of the season.

Sani extended St. Olaf's lead to 4-1 in the 65th minute, becoming the fourth different goalscorer for the Oles. The sophomore beat a defender down the left side and shot the ball past Centeno to the far side of the goal for his second of the year.

St. Olaf is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 19, as the Oles travel to Waverly, Iowa to take on Wartburg College in a non-conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
