Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late goal by Gustavus takes down men’s soccer

ST. PETER, Minn. – Luke Laurich scored in the 88th minute of play to give Gustavus Adolphus College a 1-0 victory over the St. Olaf College men's soccer team in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athlete Conference (MIAC) contest on Tuesday evening.

With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Laurich collected a loose ball in the box after the St. Olaf (3-6-0, 2-2-0 MIAC) defense blocked a pair of shots and found the back of the net to give Gustavus (6-1-1, 3-0-1 MIAC) the game's only goal. Five of the Oles' six losses this season have come by just one goal.

Senior Ben Westermeyer recorded six saves in the first half to keep the Gusties off the board, including back-to-back diving saves to keep the score 0-0 heading into the half. In the second half, he recorded four more saves to finish with 10, as Gustavus totaled 21 shots in the game.

Sophomore Thierno Gueye posted four shots in the game, while classmates Will Douglas and Olaf Morkeberg each tallied two. A corner kick from Douglas in the last minute of play gave the Oles a chance to tie it late, but sophomore Ian Lockhart's attempt was blocked by the Gusties. Lockhart also had a chance early in the second half to give the Oles the lead, but his shot found its way just wide of the goal.

Gueye had an opportunity to put the Oles ahead from a free kick in the 77th minute, but Gustavus goalkeeper Anders Severson leapt to tip away Gueye's left-footed effort from outside the box on the right flank.

St. Olaf is back to action at home on Saturday, Sept. 29 against Hamline in a MIAC contest at 3:30 p.m.
